33 Minutes That Change How You See Someone You Love

Have you ever watched a child spell the same word three different ways on a single page?

Because one line, becuz the next, becos further down. Not because they don’t know it. Somehow they know it and don’t know it at the same time.

It’s one of the most confusing things for a parent to watch, because it doesn’t fit everything else you know about your child. They’re sharp. They notice things adults miss. They can tell you a whole story in vivid detail. And yet a single word on a page can trip them up three different ways.

Here’s the thing. It’s almost never carelessness, and it’s got nothing to do with how clever they are. For a child who may be a visual thinker, a word like because has nothing to hang on to. No picture, no real thing to see. So it comes out however it lands that day.

It’s confusing to watch, and so much of it simply doesn’t seem to make sense. Which is exactly why I want to tell you about something.

Tonight is the very last screening this year of a documentary that explains all of this beautifully. Who Knew: Dyslexia is a Way of Thinking. Tuesday the 20th of October, 7pm, online, and free.

The film itself is just 33 minutes, and afterwards there’s a discussion that answers the question people always ask once it ends. So what do I do next? You’ll hear about the help that’s available, including a look at the popular Davis Parent Power course, with time for questions at the end.

It makes sense of the very things that leave parents scratching their heads. And it’s your final chance to watch it until next year.

And if you’ve got that quiet feeling that there’s more going on for someone you love, and you can’t quite put your finger on what, I’ve made a free two minute quiz that helps you make sense of what you’re seeing. Finally, some clarity.
