If you've been watching your child struggle with reading, writing or maths and you're not sure what to actually do about it, this session is for you.
Parents often say to me, "I can see it now, but where do I even start?" Teachers ask, "I've got three kids struggling in my class. What's one thing I could try tomorrow?"
Understanding the struggle and knowing how to help are two different things. This session is about the second one.
If you've seen the documentary Who Knew: Dyslexia is a Way of Thinking, think of this as the practical next step. If you haven't, you're just as welcome.
What you'll walk away with:
The handful of things I use every day with families, simple enough to try at the kitchen table or in the classroom tomorrow morning.
What actually helps when someone's stuck, and what makes it worse even when we mean well
How to spot the struggle early, before frustration takes over
Small changes at home or in class that don't need a teaching degree or hours of prep
What to say (and what to avoid saying) when someone's feeling defeated
Who it's for:
Parents, teachers, tutors, support workers, and anyone who cares about a young person who's finding learning hard. No expertise needed, just bring your questions.
The details:
Online via Zoom, 60 minutes plus Q&A. $45.
I'll email you the Zoom link once you've registered. Can't make it on the night? Register anyway and I'll send you the recording.
A bit about me (if we haven't properly met yet)
I'm Nikki. I'm a licensed Davis Facilitator, which is a fancy way of saying I've spent years learning how to help people who think and learn differently.
Before that, I spent thirty years as a classroom teacher. Every year there were three or four children who struggled with reading and writing, and back then I didn't know why or what to do for them. I do now.
I've worked with kids who thought they were "broken" or "stupid" because reading didn't make sense, and with adults who've spent decades feeling like they're the only ones struggling.
What I see most is that the hardest part for families is knowing what to do next. That stuck, helpless feeling of "I want to help, but I don't know how."
That's what this workshop is for. To give you the "how."
I'd love to see you there.
