Struggles We Overlook Every Day: School trauma, addiction, and the pain of being unseen.😪

Did you know…
So many adults have lived their entire lives affected by neurodiversity in one form or another.
It breaks my heart when I hear stories of dreams left behind because of the struggles they’ve faced. Too many people have shared with me tales of trauma and anxiety as they’ve tried to navigate a world that isn’t built for neurodiverse minds.
Just yesterday, I spoke with a new friend who, with visible inner turmoil, recalled his painful school experiences. It was emotional for both of us as he explained how he’d rather face an opponent in a kickboxing ring than ever confront a pen and paper.
He shared how, after switching schools, he was branded as ‘the dumb kid’ simply because a list of words on the board was supposed to help him. His only way out? Acting out, getting into trouble, just to avoid reading or writing.
By age 14, he turned to marijuana, leading to a downward spiral and a lifelong battle with addiction. No one chooses to be an addict, but for him, it felt easier to be seen as an addict than to admit he was illiterate.
Imagine being in his shoes for a moment.
How can we do better to support, accept, and nurture every individual in our society, no matter their challenges? I invite you to share your thoughts.
