Your Result: Knows it, can't show it
First, the question you're actually asking
Before anything else, you want to know whether this is just what children do.
It's a fair question, and it's the right one. Every child struggles with reading at some point. Every child would rather not do homework. Every child comes home tired and grumpy some weeks. If you've been told to give it time, that they'll get there, that some children just take longer, none of that advice was unreasonable. It's true for a great many children.
There are three markers that separate an ordinary struggle from a pattern with a reason behind it. You only need two of them to be worth paying attention to.
The first is inconsistency. An ordinary struggle is steady. A child who hasn't yet learned something doesn't know it on Monday and doesn't know it on Friday either. What you're describing comes and goes. They read the word, then they don't. They knew it last night and it was gone this morning. Skills that are genuinely learned don't disappear and come back, so when something behaves like that, it usually means the child isn't holding it the way everybody assumes they are.
The second is the effort behind the result. Watch how much work it takes your child to produce something perfectly ordinary. Two children can hand in the same piece of work, and for one of them it took twenty minutes and for the other it took two hours and a meltdown. The finished page looks identical, so nobody at school sees the difference. You see it every single night.
The third is that it hasn't improved with more of the same. This is the one that matters most, because it's the one you've already tested without meaning to. More reading at home. More practice. Extra help, a tutor, a programme, a reading recovery block. If a child is simply behind, more of the right thing moves them forward. When the line stays flat no matter how much is added, that's not a child who needs more input. That's an approach that doesn't fit the way they're processing it.
One practical thing before you go further. If your child hasn't had their hearing and vision checked in the last couple of years, do that first. It's quick, it's usually free through school or your GP, and it rules out something simple before you go looking for something complicated.
What you're seeing
The gap between how much your child understands and how much of it they can get onto paper. They'll tell you the whole thing out loud, in detail, with more of it than you remembered yourself, and then sit in front of a blank page with almost none of it available to them.
One mum described her son as knowing he's smarter than he's able to express. That's this pattern in one sentence.
Don't all children find writing harder than talking?
They do. Writing is harder than talking for everybody, adults included, and a child producing less on paper than they can say out loud is completely ordinary.
What isn't ordinary is the size of the gap, and there are three ways to see it clearly.
Measure the two against each other. Ask them to tell you about something they know well, and time it. Three minutes of detailed, well ordered explanation. Then ask them to write the same thing. If what lands on the page is two sentences and a full stop, that isn't a smaller version of what they said. That's a different child.
Change only the tool. Have them type the same piece on a device instead of writing it by hand. If the content improves dramatically, and it usually does, then the ideas were never the problem. The ideas were getting lost in transit.
Look at the exam pattern over time. Knew it the night before, gone on the day, more than once, in subjects they genuinely understand. A child who hadn't learned the material fails at home too.
Why it's happening
Getting a thought out of a picture thinking brain and onto paper means converting a moving image into words, holding those words in the right order, remembering how each one is spelled, and forming the letters by hand, all at the same time, while the original picture keeps moving.
Every one of those jobs takes attention. For a child whose spelling and handwriting aren't automatic, most of the attention goes to the mechanics, and there's very little left to hold the actual idea in place. By the time they've worked out how to spell the third word, the sentence they were building has gone.
Pressure makes that worse, not better, which is exactly why exam conditions produce the least accurate picture of what these young people know. Under pressure the mechanics take even more attention, and the idea has even less holding it up.
But isn't my child just not good at writing?
A child who isn't good at writing produces thin content everywhere, out loud included. The ideas are simple, the vocabulary is limited, the reasoning is basic, and it's consistent whichever way you ask them.
That's not what you're describing. You're describing rich content out loud and thin content on paper, from the same child, about the same topic, on the same afternoon. The thinking is clearly there. Something is happening between the thought and the page, and that's a mechanical problem rather than an intellectual one.
This distinction matters more than almost anything else on this page, because your child has very likely already concluded the opposite about themselves. Most of them have worked out by about age nine that what's on the page is what counts, and they've drawn the obvious conclusion from it.
Why what you've tried hasn't worked
Revision, extra practice, more writing, and study skills all work on the knowledge, and the knowledge was never missing. Extra time in an exam helps a little, because it takes some pressure off the mechanics, but it doesn't change how much attention the mechanics are eating.
What helps
Giving them a way to hold a thought still long enough to get it down, and making the mechanical parts automatic enough that they stop competing with the thinking. Once those two things are in place, what your child knows and what your child can show stop being two different quantities.
One thing to try this week
Next time there's a piece of writing to do, let them say the whole thing out loud first while you write it down for them, word for word, before they touch the page themselves. Then let them copy it out. Watch what happens. If the piece is suddenly good, you've separated the thinking from the transcribing, and you've proved to both of you which one was the problem.
None of this is a choice your child is making, and none of it is a measure of how clever they are.
Each of these patterns is the same thing seen from a different angle, a picture thinking mind meeting a system built for a different kind of brain, and adapting to it in the only way available.
The adaptations are clever. Guessing to keep up, going quiet, avoiding the subject, holding it together until home time. Every one of them is a solution your child came up with on their own, without help, to a problem nobody had explained to them. And every one of them takes far more out of them than anybody realises.
